"How Do Probiotics Compare to Placebo in Treating Necrotizing Enterocolitis?"

K Alfaleh and D Bassler, in this article from the Cochrane Database of Systemic Reviews, investigated the efficacy of probiotics in treating necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) in preterm infants, who are at increased risk of morbidity and mortality as a result of the condition. The authors surmised that prophylactic use of enteral probiotics, because they (among other things) prevent bacterial migration across the mucosa, may minimize the effects of the enterocolitis. Nine randomized or quasi-randomized controlled trials were reviewed; those trials included a total of 1,425 preterm infants. The authors concluded that enteral probiotics did, in fact, reduced the severity and mortality of NEC in the infants studied. They also concluded that the results supported a practice change for certain infants at birth.
